The Human-Centered AI Lab is a fully constituted research institution: incorporated in Ohio, recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity, governed by an independent board of directors, with dedicated banking and grant administration. We are equipped to serve as prime awardee, subawardee, or CRADA counterparty for federal, foundation, and industry-sponsored research, and we specialize in assembling distributed expert teams that traditional institutional structures cannot easily support.
Our co-founders serve as Principal Investigators representing the Modern Language Association — the largest scholarly organization in language and literature — in the consortium of NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI, formerly the U.S. AI Safety Institute). Their work focuses on LLM evaluation: how large language models process negation, prohibition, and persuasion.
Our co-founders lead the Schmidt Sciences Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI) Archival Intelligence project — one of 23 teams selected worldwide (Schmidt Sciences HAVI). AI-powered rescue of endangered cultural heritage archives in New Orleans, with community-governed data sovereignty.
